Talks at the Square with Dr. James C. Liao – A pathway to innovation: A personal journey in synthetic biology and biopharma in Taiwan
About this Event
Dr. James C. Liao, President of Academia Sinica in Taiwan and professor in metabolic and synthetic biology will visit BioInnovation Institute at the popular event series ‘Talks at the Square’ to give a talk on “A pathway to innovation: A personal journey in synthetic biology and biopharma in Taiwan”.
Innovation in science and technology drives the progress of society and economic growth. In this talk, Dr. Liao will discuss a few highlights from his career, and talk about his current efforts in promoting biomedical research innovation. In particular, he will share learnings from the biopharmaceutical industry in Taiwan and the newly established National Biotechnology Research Park managed by Academia Sinica.
Dr. Liao is the co-founder and board member of Easel Biotechnologies, who’s microbial technology produces alcohols with 3-8 carbon atoms from CO2. This technology shows promise for direct bioconversion of solar energy and CO2 into chemical feedstock.

About Dr. James C. Liao
Dr. Liao received his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from National Taiwan University and earned his Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He later became a Professor of Chemical Engineering and Chair of the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department at the University of California, Los Angeles.
His interest in biofuel synthesis was sparked by the belief that solving energy-related problems should not just rely upon regulation but needs fundamental innovations in science and technology to formulate long-term sustainable solutions. James has received various awards and recognition for his work with biofuel synthesis, amongst others by the National Academy of Engineering, the White House Champion of Change in Renewable Energy, Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award and many others recognizing his success in the groundbreaking research of biofuels.
About the Talks on the Square event series
‘Talks on the Square’ is an event series by BioInnovation Institute (BII) with a key focus on spreading ideas and knowledge in life science entrepreneurship to inspire researchers to bring science out of the lab and into the economy. The events feature high-level international speakers with topics that emphasize innovations and inspirational topics within biotech, medtech and pharma. Talks on the Square are hosted at The Square event space of the BII facilities in Copenhagen Bio Science Park (COBIS) in Copenhagen.
